Celebration of Contemporary Welsh Painting
Merthyr Tydfil will host this exciting new event which will put Welsh painting and painters at the heart of a celebration of the work of current and significant artists. In addition there will be opportunities for people to participate in a wide range of activities to encourage many more people to experience the process of “making” for themselves.
The event is broadly divided into two parts; exhibitions and community activities (details of the latter will be released in due course). The exhibitions, coordinated in partnership with the gallery staff by Glasbury Arts, will be held at Cyfarthfa Castle and Redhouse. Exhibitors include a selection of some of the finest painters from across Wales, a number with renowned international and/or national reputations:
- Shani Rhys James
- Brendan Burns
- Mary/Lloyd Jones
- Sally Matthews
- Alan Salisbury
- John Darlison
- Kate Freeman
- Joanne Smith
- Ken Elias
- Veronica Gibson
- Charles Burton
- Gustavius Payne
- Martyn Jones
The exhibition will also include work from two projects linked to the past and the future, through the Josef Herman Foundation/Glasbury Arts/Swansea University schools accredited project. Pupils will have the chance to learn about the history of internationally renowned painter, Josef Herman; take part in workshops/ lectures at Josef Herman Foundation/Swansea University/Glyn Vivian Gallery and produce a body of course work that could be exhibited in the Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Painting.
In addition a Merthyr/Dowlais Project involving local schools will focus on the work of Cedric Morris, who contributed so much to art education in the South Wales Valleys in the 1930s, and then producing project work that can also be displayed in this exhibition.
We intend running a coach to both exhibitions on a specific date details to follow.

DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF PETER GOODRIDGE
The idea for this event was the “brain child” of Peter (Pete) Goodridge who had spent many yearsunsuccessfully trying to persuade galleries, arts organisations and individuals about the need for abi-annual event celebrating the work of the amazing range of current painters within Wales. When Glasbury Arts and Cyfarthfa Castle picked up the idea and worked with him over the last three years, he was so excited that what he had described as a dream, would become reality on the 7 July 2017. It was therefore particularly sad when his death at the beginning of June was announced because it meant he would not see his dream fulfilled. All of us who have enjoyed working with Pete on the projectimmediately decided we would dedicate the event to his memory.
